Chapter One

Brody Miller leaned back against the concrete wall of the courthouse holding cell, crossing his arms over his chest to maintain his usual aggressive swagger. He wore a standard-issue orange jumpsuit that hung loosely over his tall, wiry frame. The fabric scratched against his skin, reminding him of his current predicament, but he refused to let the discomfort show on his face. He sat on the bench running along the far side of the room, staring at the blank space in front of him while the reality of his situation settled into his mind. He had been found guilty of a charge the courts classified as Felony by Default. It was a formal term for using magic to terrorize those who possessed no magical abilities of their own.

This was his first felony charge, and he knew he faced the prospect of actual prison time. The government did not take magical infractions lightly, enforcing a strict division between those who possessed supernatural abilities and those who lived normal lives. The laws dictated that any display of magic directed at a non-magical person resulted in immediate prosecution. Brody found the system ridiculous, viewing the regulations as an unfair restriction on his freedom. He believed the laws were unjustly severe, designed by cowards who wanted to punish people for being born special. Having fun with his abilities seemed like a natural right, and he saw no reason to apologize for using the gifts he had been given.

His powers had manifested six months ago on his eighteenth birthday. The sudden surge of magical energy had amplified his existing arrogance, making him feel invincible in a world he previously viewed with disdain. Growing up in an affluent neighborhood in Austin, Texas, Brody had carried a chip on his shoulder. His biological parents had split up when he was twelve, leaving him to navigate his teenage years with a pervasive sense of resentment. His mother worked as a teacher, and his stepfather was a prominent lawyer, providing him with a comfortable life that he actively rejected. He rebelled against any form of authority, using intimidation to mask the anger simmering beneath the surface.

He spent his days running around the city with his non-magical friend Cody, treating the streets like their personal playground. When his magic finally bloomed, it gave him the ultimate tool to assert his dominance over everyone around him. His abilities manifested as raw, untrained force, allowing him to manipulate physical objects with his mind. He targeted his stepbrother Tyler, using these newfound abilities to bully the older boy without fear of retaliation. Tyler possessed no magic of his own, making him an easy target for Brody’s constant harassment. Brody never cared about the rules or the potential consequences, assuming his god-given potential made him superior to anyone who tried to stand in his way.

The incident that landed him in this holding area had been born out of pure, arrogant lust. He had spent a Saturday afternoon lounging at the outdoor shopping pavilion, bored and looking for a thrill. His magic allowed him to manipulate objects from a distance, and he realized he could target the clothing of the attractive women walking past him. He focused his mind on a blonde college student carrying shopping bags, using an invisible force to unzip her denim skirt and snap the clasp of her bra in one fluid motion. The skirt dropped to her ankles, and her silk blouse fell open to expose a pair of plump, bare breasts to the afternoon crowd. Brody watched her gasp and drop her bags, her hands scrambling to cover her bare skin and hide her pink nipples while he moved on to his next target.

He spent an hour causing chaos across the pavilion. He unhooked bikini tops under summer dresses, forced buttons to pop off blouses, and tugged down women’s pants to reveal their lace panties and bare asses. One busty redhead had her tight sweater ripped open from the collar down to the hem, leaving her massive breasts spilling out over a flimsy push-up bra while she shrieked in shock. The sight of so many beautiful women suddenly stripped naked in public gave him a massive rush of adrenaline and arousal. He sat on a bench and watched them flush bright red, enjoying the undeniable power he held over their bodies. He felt entitled to the view, treating the non-magical shoppers like personal entertainment designed for his own sexual gratification.

The court convicted him of causing distress via magic. On its own, the crime only carried a misdemeanor charge. The real problem was his recent track record. This was his third misdemeanor conviction in just six months, triggering a strict federal law. Three magical misdemeanors automatically upgraded the final charge to a Felony by Default. That classification meant the real possibility of a long prison sentence.

He stretched his legs out over the bare floor, refusing to let the anxiety show on his face. The holding cell offered nothing to look at besides blank walls and a solid steel door. He kept his eyes fixed on that door, waiting for the guards to escort him to the courtroom for his final sentencing hearing. Brody’s criminal record would have been worse if his stepfather, Jack, hadn’t gotten him out of trouble on several occasions. But there would be no reprieve this time. The three-strike rule tied the prominent lawyer’s hands, and Brody knew he was on his own.

The threat of federal prison gnawed at him. He knew the courts loved making an example out of newly awakened magical users who abused their gifts. He swallowed the fear down and masked his nerves with a thick layer of defiant arrogance. He knew the prosecutors wanted him to break down, hoping he would cry and beg the judge for mercy. He refused to give them the satisfaction.

He ran a hand through his messy brown hair, letting a cocky smirk form on his lips. The experience just made him want to hone his magic more. He sat there plotting all the ways he would bend the rules once he got out. He figured his stepfather might still find a loophole to get him probation. If he managed to avoid a real sentence, he planned to meet up with Cody tonight and brag about beating the justice system.

He rested his head against the wall, closing his eyes to savor the quiet solitude before the hearing. He felt no remorse for exposing those women at the mall. The non-magical population needed to understand their place in the hierarchy, and Brody saw himself as the perfect person to deliver the message. He felt a surge of pride in his actions, viewing his arrest as a badge of honor that proved he was willing to challenge a rigged system.

The sound of keys jingling in the corridor broke his concentration, signaling an end to his isolation. He maintained his slouched posture, refusing to sit up straight or show any nerves as footsteps approached his location. The lock disengaged with a loud click, and the door swung open, revealing a uniformed guard standing in the threshold.

The guard leaned against the frame, a sarcastic grin forming on his face as he looked down at the 18-year-old delinquent.

“You ready for your death sentence, kid?” the man asked, chuckling at his morbid joke.

Brody kept his smirk, pushing himself off the bench with a slow, deliberate swagger—time to face the music.

❖

A loud hum of murmurs filled the packed gallery of the Travis County Courthouse as the side door opened. Brody walked into the room alongside the uniformed guard, his loose orange jumpsuit swishing around his legs with each step. The wooden benches behind the defense tables were filled with local citizens and reporters. This case had drawn far more media attention than his previous misdemeanors. Recent protests across the state argued for the government to do more to restrain magical users and keep the public safe. People wanted strict consequences, and Brody knew they wanted to see him locked in a cage.

He kept his chin up, refusing to let the angry glares affect him. The guard directed him to the wooden chair at the defense table. His stepfather was nowhere to be seen, leaving a court-appointed public defender sitting next to him. The lawyer barely looked at him, knowing this case would be setting his career back a couple of years. Brody ignored the man, leaning back in his seat and crossing his arms over his chest to maintain his confident facade.

The chatter in the gallery grew louder as people pointed at him. He recognized a few faces from the local news broadcasts, commentators who made a living crying about the dangers of untrained magic. He found their fake fear pathetic. If they possessed even a fraction of his talent, they would do the exact same things he did at that mall.

“We are here for the sentencing of Brody Miller,” the judge said, his voice echoing through the microphone. “Mr. Miller, you have been found guilty of causing distress via magic. Due to your prior convictions, this charge has been elevated to a Felony by Default.”

“The prosecution has asked for the maximum penalty,” the older man continued, looking over the documents on his desk. “They want a five-year sentence in federal prison for your crime.”

Brody kept his face blank, forcing his muscles to stay relaxed. A cold knot formed in his stomach at the mention of a federal prison, and he swallowed hard to keep his panic hidden. He knew he was on his own, realizing he had no safety net left to catch him. He waited for the judge to bring the gavel down and end his normal life, bracing himself for the worst possible outcome.

“However, the state has recently implemented a new diversion program for young magical users in an attempt to help them become productive and useful members of society,” the judge announced. “The government believes some offenders possess the potential for rehabilitation if placed in the right environment.”

Brody sat there in shock. He was expecting to get at least a couple of years. The judge was angling for a Supreme Court nomination, and the young man fully expected to be made an example of. Was the old fart about to offer him an easy way out?

“I am offering you a choice today, young man,” the judge said, folding his hands together. “You can spend the next three years of your life locked inside four walls at the Magic Users unit in a federal Penitentiary. Or, you can agree to attend Millbrook Academy for a term of four years.”

Brody sat still, letting the words sink in.

“It is a specialized institution for the magically gifted,” the judge explained, his tone stern. “It is located in an isolated region in Washington State, far away from the non-magical public. You will reside on campus, attend classes, and learn to control your abilities under the supervision of trained professionals.”

Brody had to bite the inside of his cheek to keep his composure. A school? They were sentencing him to a magical boarding school instead of federal jail. He pictured a campus full of other teenagers, dorm rooms without cell bars, and teachers who wanted to show him how to use his powers. It sounded like an upgrade. He had worried about surviving alongside hardened criminals, but a school felt like a playground. He knew he could easily dominate a bunch of sheltered students and tired instructors. He imagined all the fun he could have with his magic once he learned the actual mechanics behind it.

“Before you make your decision, you need to understand how this diversion program operates,” the judge continued, silencing the restless gallery with a sharp look. “Millbrook Academy is not a summer camp. If you accept this offer, you forfeit your right to appeal this conviction. You will be bound to the academy’s rules for the full four-year term, and you will be unable to just quit and walk out. You must complete the entire four years.”

Brody kept his face impassive, masking his inner glee. A bunch of teachers telling him what to do sounded like a joke compared to prison guards with batons.

“If you decide later that this is too much for you, that you want to break the rules just to be expelled and get an easier sentence in jail, I have bad news for you,” the older man continued, leaning forward over his high desk. “The principal and his staff have unique ways of dealing with rule breakers, and you will be at their disposal.”

Brody listened to the warning without flinching. The prospect of spending three years locked inside a concrete cell at the Alamo County Pen offered a guaranteed nightmare. He pictured the violent offenders he’d have been locked up with just because he humiliated a couple of ladies. A boarding school in Washington State presented a favorable alternative. A campus meant open air, actual beds, and a chance to sleep without worrying about getting shanked in the showers.

“The decision is yours, Mr. Miller,” the judge said, holding his pen over the official documents. “Do you accept the terms of the diversion program, or will you serve your time in federal prison?”

Brody let a cocky smirk form on his lips. He could tell the whispers behind him were dismayed that the young delinquent was being given a second chance. They wanted the state to throw the book at him, and they just offered him a way to hone his special gifts. He looked directly at the older man.

“I’ll take the academy, your Honor.”

❖

The transport van rattled along the rural highway, marking the final stretch of a grueling thirty-two-hour drive. The journey had started back in Brody’s hometown of Austin, Texas, taking them across endless miles of asphalt before finally crossing into the isolated forests of Washington State. The young man sat alone in the backseat, staring out the reinforced window at the passing pine trees while he planned his delinquent act at his new school. His wrists were locked together inside a pair of magic-dampening cuffs. The thick metal bands neutralized his abilities, severing the innate connection he usually felt with the air around him.

He rested his head against the cool glass, drifting into a half-asleep daze as the endless rows of evergreens blurred past his vision. His mind wandered to the societal shifts that had defined the modern era, recalling the history lessons he had ignored during high school. Almost a hundred years ago, the first magic user was born into the world. The government had managed to keep the existence of supernatural abilities a secret for seventy-five years, hiding the unexplainable incidents behind aggressive cover-ups and classified files. They had built specialized containment facilities and silenced anyone who witnessed a spell being cast, maintaining the illusion of a mundane reality.

The rise of social media and the digital age ruined those containment efforts, making it impossible to brush off the truth. Smartphones captured civilian recordings of people manipulating the elements or surviving impossible accidents, and the footage spread across the internet faster than the authorities could censor it. Now, the world knew of the existence of magic users. The statistics showed that approximately 0.15 percent of the United States population possessed the magic gene, translating to about five hundred thousand people scattered across the country. The trait baffled scientists because it was not hereditary, striking at random across all demographics and income brackets. More importantly, the gene remained dormant and undetectable until the exact moment a person celebrated their eighteenth birthday, plunging unsuspecting teenagers into a world of unchecked power.

Brody remembered the morning he turned eighteen, waking up with a sudden, electrifying awareness of his surroundings. It felt like a sleeping muscle had snapped awake, granting him the ability to communicate with nature and enforce his will. He had spent the last six months treating his magic like a limitless credit card, using it to terrorize the non-magical population, and his antics earned him an impressed, loyal small group of friends.

He wore a navy blue hoodie over a white t-shirt, paired with blue denim jeans that fit his tall, slim frame well. The casual outfit offered him some comfort during the cross-country trip, allowing him to stretch his long legs across the stiff vinyl seat. It was a damn sight better than the orange jumpsuit he had grown used to since his last arrest. Two armed guards occupied the front of the vehicle, separated from their teenage passenger by a sturdy wire mesh partition. They had taken turns driving the van through the day and night, offering little in the way of conversation to break up the monotony of the long haul. Brody had tried to provoke them early on in the trip, throwing out sarcastic insults and demanding they stop for better food, but the men had ignored his remarks. Their silence left him alone with his thoughts, giving him ample time to plot how he would assert his dominance over the other students once he arrived.

The GPS on the dashboard indicated they were passing through Aurora. The isolated town sat forty miles north of Spokane and served as one of the few magic-dominant communities in the country. Magic users and their families chose to settle down in the secluded area, building lives free from the judgmental and terrified glances of the wider population. Brody looked out the window and noticed people walking along the sidewalks, openly using their abilities to carry groceries or float objects along the street. The sight fascinated him, proving that a world existed where people like him could operate out in the open.

As the van drove through the quiet neighborhoods, Brody looked up and spotted his new home. Millbrook Academy sat atop a steep hill overlooking Aurora. Its large central building looked majestic in the local skyline, dominating the horizon with grand stone architecture. The driver turned onto a paved private road that wound up the hillside, eventually slowing down to pass through a set of open iron gates.

Brody leaned forward against his restraints, expecting to see a fortified compound filled with prison guards. He had braced himself to face a brutal disciplinary environment. Instead, the vehicle rolled onto a campus that looked like a normal college. Expansive green lawns stretched out between historic stone buildings, intersected by wide pedestrian walkways and manicured hedges. Groups of teenagers walked along the paths, chatting and laughing with each other as they headed toward different facilities. Some students sat under the shade of large oak trees, reading textbooks or tossing a ball back and forth in the afternoon breeze.

He blinked in surprise, wondering if the judge had made a mistake. Had the judge merely sentenced him to a regular private college? The normalcy of the place fed right into his arrogant delusions, making him realize he had been handed a free pass. If this was the strict environment the courts used to punish offenders, Brody knew he would rule the place by the end of the week.

The van pulled into a circular drop-off zone near the center of the campus, coming to a halt near the main building. The engine cut off, and the two guards stepped out of the front doors, stretching their stiff legs after the exhausting drive. One of the men walked around to the back, pulling the rear door open and gesturing for the teenager to step out into the fresh Washington air. Despite it being late September, the air was a little chilly, and the Texas native wasn’t used to that type of environment.

“This is the end of the line, kid,” the guard said, resting a hand near his utility belt. “Step out and keep your hands where I can see them.”

Brody slid across the vinyl seat and dropped his boots onto the pavement, offering the man a cocky grin. “You guys sure you brought me to the right place?” Brody asked, nodding his head toward a group of attractive young women walking past them. “I think I could get used to this already.”

“Just keep walking,” the guard replied, ignoring the sarcasm. “The principal is expecting you.”

The two men flanked him on either side, escorting him away from the parked van and toward the stone steps of the main building. Brody kept his chin high, walking with a swagger in his step that demanded attention from everyone around him. His casual clothes blended in with the diverse styles worn by the other students, but the metal cuffs binding his wrists drew curious looks. Several teenagers paused their conversations to stare at the new arrival, tracking the restrained delinquent as he paraded through their territory. Brody enjoyed the audience, flashing a confident smirk at anyone who maintained eye contact with him. He wanted them to know he was not some frightened student. He wondered who his first victim would be.

He flexed his fingers inside the restraints, anticipating the moment they would remove the cuffs and grant him access to his abilities. He planned to test the boundaries of the school rules on his first day, eager to see how much power he needed to exert to make the other students fall in line. He hadn’t had much experience with other magic users, but he knew his own power, and he fully intended to demonstrate it.

As he walked along the footpath, Brody wished his friends back home could see the weak punishment the justice system had handed down. He took note of the grand architecture defining the campus. Tall columns framed the entrance, supporting a decorative stone pediment that gave the structure a regal appearance. He felt a surge of excitement building in his chest, ready to claim the grounds as his new personal playground. The guards guided him up the wide concrete steps, leading him toward the front door of the main Millbrook Academy building. This was going to be fun.

❖

The wooden doors of the main building swung open, admitting the two transport guards and their teenage prisoner into a wide corridor. It was early morning, leaving the halls quiet and mostly empty since most of the students were likely still in bed. Brody walked between his armed escorts, his boots tapping against the tiled floor as he took in his new surroundings. He looked at the rows of metal lockers lining the painted walls, noting how ordinary the place appeared. He kept his chin high and let a smirk form on his lips, eager to project an aura of dominance right from the start.

He spotted three young women standing a few yards down the hallway. They were gathered around an open locker, whispering and laughing among themselves as they prepared for the day. Brody felt a familiar spark of lust pool in his gut as he checked them out. The girl in the middle caught his attention right away. She had long blonde hair cascading down her back and wore a short pleated skirt that showed off her smooth thighs. A fitted sweater stretched across her chest, emphasizing a generous pair of breasts.

The two other girls were equally attractive, wearing casual jeans and cropped t-shirts, but Brody kept his focus locked on the blonde. He slowed his pace just enough to prolong the view, wanting to appreciate the scenery. The guards beside him let out annoyed sighs, but they didn’t physically force him to speed up. Brody decided to test the waters, wanting to establish his reputation as a player on his first day.

“Hey, beautiful,” the young man called out.

The three girls stopped their conversation and turned their heads. The blonde raised an eyebrow, looking the restrained teenager up and down. She took in the cuffs he was wearing and crossed her arms over her chest in a defensive posture.

“Are you a parking ticket?” Brody continued, flashing his most charming smile. “Because you’ve got fine written all over you.”

The blonde let out a loud groan and rolled her eyes. She turned her back on him, returning to her friends and ignoring the corny pickup line. The other two girls giggled, whispering something to the blonde as they resumed their private chat.

The guard on Brody’s left placed a firm hand on the teenager’s shoulder and shoved him forward.

“Keep it moving, kid,” the guard ordered, steering him away from the lockers.

Brody stumbled a few steps but quickly regained his footing. A wide smile broke across his face as he fell back into step with the men. The rejection didn’t bother him in the slightest. He liked a girl who played hard to get, and he knew he had plenty of time to break her down. He planned to track her down later, intent on showing her exactly what kind of guy he was. If he failed, there would be plenty of fish in the sea anyway.

They continued down the long hallway, passing several numbered doors that Brody assumed were classrooms. The lack of security cameras made him feel like he was walking through a fancy resort rather than somewhere that was meant to instill discipline into him. That judge had made a massive mistake sending him here, and he intended to take full advantage of their error. He flexed his wrists inside the dampening restraints, eager to get the thick bands off his skin. His magic felt suppressed, trapped behind an invisible wall in his mind, and he wanted that power back.

The corridor opened up into a spacious waiting area. A large oak desk sat in the center of the room, positioned in front of a closed door featuring a brass nameplate. Brody stopped in his tracks, his eyes zeroing in on the woman sitting behind the desk.

The woman was gorgeous, looking more like a fashion model than a school secretary. She had flawless skin, vibrant red lips, and dark hair pinned up in an elegant style. She wore a white button-down blouse unfastened at the top, offering a tantalizing view of her deep cleavage. Her breasts strained against the fabric, and Brody found himself staring directly at her chest. They sure know how to make them around here, he thought, licking his lips in anticipation.

The woman looked up from her computer monitor and offered a warm, welcoming smile. She stood up from her chair, smoothing down the front of her black pencil skirt. The garment hugged her wide hips and showcased a stunning hourglass figure. She walked around the desk, her black high heels clicking against the floor as she approached the group.

“Good morning,” the woman said, her voice soft and inviting. “My name is Ms. Potts.”

Brody grinned. “I have something I’d like to put in your pot,” he replied, leaning forward to get a better look at her cleavage.

Ms. Potts paused, her smile faltering for a fraction of a second. She seemed taken aback by the sleazy comment coming from the brash teenager. The shock disappeared quickly, replaced by her original cheerful expression. She brushed the crude joke off without offering a verbal response, maintaining her professional composure. She just stood there, folding her hands together and waiting for the transport team to finish their job.

The guard standing on the right grabbed Brody’s arms and pulled them forward. The man reached into his pocket, retrieved a small silver key, and inserted it into the locking mechanism of the magic-dampening cuffs. The metal bands clicked open and fell away, leaving Brody’s hands free for the first time in days.

Brody rubbed his sore wrists as the familiar rush of energy returned to his body. The blockage vanished, restoring his innate connection to the physical world around him. He flexed his fingers, enjoying the sensation of magic buzzing just beneath his skin. He resisted the urge to test his abilities right then and there, knowing he needed to figure out what he was up against before demonstrating his talents.

“This little shit is your problem now,” the guard said, handing the cuffs to his partner. “Good luck with him.”

“Thank you for bringing him safely, officers,” Ms. Potts replied, offering the two men a polite nod. “Principal Hughes can’t wait to get started on the program.”

The guards nodded back, turned around, and walked back down the corridor, leaving Brody alone with the beautiful secretary. Brody crossed his arms over his chest, shooting Ms. Potts a wide grin. He felt a hundred times more confident now that his hands were free and his magic was accessible.

Ms. Potts looked him over, her eyes scanning his tall frame. She kept her bright smile in place, gesturing toward the closed door behind the desk.

“Follow me,” the secretary said, turning the brass handle. “The principal is waiting.”

❖

The office door opened, and Ms. Potts stepped inside with Brody following close behind her. She walked toward a large wooden desk sitting at the center of the room and gestured toward the man occupying the high-backed leather chair.

“Principal Hughes, this is Brody Miller, the felony deferment transfer,” Ms. Potts announced, keeping her bright smile firmly in place.

Principal Robert Hughes stood up from his seat and offered a polite, welcoming smile. He extended a hand across the desk to greet the new arrival. Brody accepted the handshake, giving the older man a firm, challenging grip to project his dominance.

“Thanks, Clarissa,” Principal Hughes said, looking back over at his secretary. “You can go.”

Ms. Potts blushed at the familiar use of her first name. She gave a quick nod, turned on her heels, and walked away, pulling the door closed behind her as she exited the room.

“Take a seat, Mr. Miller,” the principal instructed, sitting back down in his own chair.

“I prefer to stand,” the young man replied, crossing his arms over his chest to maintain his arrogant demeanor.

Hughes let out a soft chuckle. “That wasn’t a request, boy.”

The principal flicked his wrist. Suddenly, an invisible force slammed into Brody’s chest, shoving him backward and forcing him down into the plush guest chair. Brody let his eyes widen in shock, stunned by the sudden physical assault. He had never been the victim of magic before, having only used his abilities on others back in Texas. The realization that someone else could manipulate him sent a spike of defensive anger through his veins. He lifted his right hand, gathering his own energy as if he were about to cast a retaliatory spell.

“Think carefully before making a decision you are going to regret,” Hughes warned, his voice calm and unbothered.

The convict glared at the principal, wanting to show the older man he wasn’t someone to be messed with. Despite his fury, the effortless display of power gave Brody pause, forcing him to reconsider his next move. He decided to fall back for the moment and slowly lowered his hand to rest on his denim-clad thigh.

“Smart decision,” the principal noted, folding his hands together on the desk. “Now tell me, what do you think the most important factor is with regard to a magic user’s magical strength?”

Brody shrugged, leaning back against the upholstery. “What do I care? Practice, I guess?”

“As I thought,” Hughes chuckled again, shaking his head. “You have so much to learn, young man.”

The older man leaned forward, steepling his fingers. “Age is the most important factor. An untrained sixty-year-old will easily be able to out-duel an experienced eighteen-year-old because of the raw power flowing through their system. A magic user’s power grows with age, and the differences are most noticeable between young adults such as yourself.”

Brody stayed silent, half-listening to the lecture.

“You would do well to remember that before you start picking fights with members of the faculty,” Hughes added, his tone carrying a subtle threat.

The principal relaxed his posture and offered another polite smile. “Now, let’s start fresh. Welcome to Millbrook Academy, where young adults learn to hone and channel their natural magical abilities and turn themselves into productive members of society.”

“Thanks,” Brody muttered, keeping his sarcastic edge intact.

“You will find the structure here a little relaxed,” Hughes explained. “The only rule you must abide by, one appointed by your sentencing judge, is that you are not to leave the grounds without permission from a faculty member. Other than that, there are close to no rules on this campus.”

“What, what?” The young man’s ears perked up. He uncrossed his arms, his eyes widening with surprise. “No rules? So I can just do whatever I want?”

Hughes laughed, waving a hand in the air. “To the contrary. The teachers all have their own rules and expectations for their classes, and they are more than capable of enforcing their standards.”

“And what about the other students?” Brody asked. This school had suddenly gotten interesting.

“Our survival of the fittest philosophy has a way of instilling structure and order into the culture,” the principal continued, leaning back in his leather chair. “If you try to disrupt the natural order of things on your own, you may find yourself facing the wrath of older, more powerful peers.”

The young man snickered, leaning forward in his seat. “I’m not scared of anyone.”

“I can see that,” Hughes offered a knowing smile. “I wonder how long it’ll be before that changes.”

The older man picked up a file from his desk and flipped it open. “There is one more thing before I send you on your way. The school operates a strict fifty-fifty gender split amongst its student population. We found it is easier when one gender doesn’t dominate the other in numbers.”

“Okay,” Brody drawled, wondering why the man was sharing demographic statistics with him. “So there’s one bitch for each of us then?”

“Something like that,” Hughes chuckled, clearly amused by the spunky response from the teenager. “The last student to leave us was a bright girl named Millie. Since her departure, we have one fewer female student than male on the roster, and you will need to make up the numbers.”

Brody frowned, his mind struggling to piece together the bizarre statement. He wondered if the school expected him to recruit a new girl to take Millie’s place. Perhaps they wanted him to share his room with a female student to balance out the dorms. He stared at the older man, waiting for the punchline of the joke, but the principal maintained a deadpan expression. The silence stretched out between them, giving the teenager time to replay the words in his head. You will need to make up the numbers. The implication finally clicked into place, sending a cold shockwave straight down his spine.

“Wait, what?” the delinquent asked, gripping the armrests of his chair. “Is this some kind of sick hazing ritual?”

“This is no joke, Mr. Miller,” Hughes replied, his tone stripping away any remaining warmth. “Don’t worry. I know exactly how to make this right. Stand up and step behind your chair.”

“What? No fucking way!” Brody shot back, his voice rising in fury.

“I don’t have time for your stalling,” the principal sighed.

Hughes flicked his wrist. The same invisible force from earlier grabbed Brody by the chest, ripping him out of the seat. He flew through the air, flipping backward before his boots slammed onto the floor directly behind the guest chair. He gasped for breath, gripping the backrest to steady himself.

“This will only take a minute, and it won’t hurt in the slightest,” Hughes promised.

Before Brody could react or retaliate, the older man flicked his wrist a third time.

A wave of paralyzing energy washed over Brody, freezing his muscles on the spot. He couldn’t move his arms or kick his legs, locked into a standing position while a strange tingling sensation erupted across his scalp. The feeling sank deep into his pores, and his short brown hair began to grow at an unnatural speed. The strands cascaded past his ears and tumbled down his back in silky dark blonde waves.

The magic traveled down his forehead, shifting the underlying bone structure of his face. His sharp jawline rounded out, softening into a delicate, feminine shape. His cheekbones rose, and his lips plumped outward into a luscious pout. His neck slimmed down as his Adam’s apple melted away.

The spell drifted lower, wrapping around his shoulders. The broad, athletic structure cracked and pulled inward, narrowing his frame into a petite silhouette. His biceps and triceps lost their masculine definition, softening into slender, delicate arms.

The energy concentrated on his chest, building an intense pressure beneath his white t-shirt. His flat pectoral muscles began to swell, pushing outward in a sudden burst of soft tissue. The flesh expanded into a pair of breasts, pressing firmly against the cotton fabric. The new mass pulled at his chest, settling into a pair of modest B-cups that bounced gently against his ribcage. His nipples hardened, becoming sensitive and prominent as they rubbed against the inside of his shirt, sending a humiliating spike of arousal straight to his groin.

His waist cinched inward, carving out an hourglass curve that left his blue hoodie hanging loose around his torso. His pelvis cracked, flaring outward to widen his hips. His buttocks rounded out, expanding into a plump, feminine shape that stretched the rear of his denim jeans. The excess fabric bunched around his waist, struggling to accommodate the drastic shift in his proportions.

The magic continued its downward path, sinking straight into his groin. Brody tried hard to fight back, desperate to break the paralyzing hold Hughes had over his body, but he found he couldn’t move or speak. A hot, humiliating sensation flooded his crotch as he felt his cock shrivel beneath his denim pants. He watched in absolute horror as he felt his hard length retreat inward, shrinking down until it dissolved into a small, sensitive clit. His balls pulled up into his abdomen and vanished without a trace, replaced by a wet, slick slit forming between his thighs. His manhood was erased in seconds, leaving him with a tight, inviting pussy.

Continuing further, his legs lost their masculine strength, the stiff muscles melting away into smooth, shapely thighs. His overall height plummeted, dropping several inches as the magic compressed his spine and left him looking up at the rest of the room. His feet shrank inside his boots, leaving his toes swimming in the empty leather space.

The spell finally faded, releasing its invisible grip on his muscles. Brody stumbled forward, taking a clumsy step as he tried to process the changes. His field of vision was half blocked by the long strands of dark blonde hair falling across his face. He almost tripped over the hem of his jeans, finding the denim far too baggy for his new petite proportions.

“What the hell did you do to me?” Brody asked, immediately slapping a hand over his mouth in shock.

The voice escaping his plump lips was airy, high-pitched, and undeniably feminine. It sounded like it belonged to a bubbly cheerleader, stripping away the aggressive baritone he had possessed just moments ago.

Hughes grinned, leaning back in his leather chair. “Welcome to Millbrook, Brittney. That will be your new name for the duration of your stay. I will change you back to your former self at the end of your four-year term, if that is what you desire.”

“You can’t do this,” the blonde protested, his voice cracking with fresh panic.

“That is not true,” the older man replied, his tone dripping with sarcasm. “Seeing as I already have.”

Brody raised a hand, gathering energy to cast a spell and force a transformation back to normal. A brief tingle sparked across his blonde scalp before the magic harmlessly dissipated into the air, leaving his soft, feminine body unchanged.

Hughes laughed, clearly enjoying the display of futile resistance. “You will soon learn that there is magic far stronger than anything you can wield here, Brittney.”

Brody stared at his small hands, his chest heaving as his mind struggled to accept the loss of control. His budding breasts and sensitive nipples provided a nagging reminder of his new reality.

“You will be staying in the women’s wing of the residential building,” Hughes stated nonchalantly, picking up a pen from his desk. “Your dorm is 4C, and your roommate is excited to meet you.”

“Change me back,” Brody demanded, glaring at the man who had just upended his life.

Hughes flicked his wrist, and the office door swung open by itself. “This meeting is over. Good luck during your stay here, Brittney. I look forward to reading about your progress.”

He flicked his wrist one last time, unleashing another burst of invisible force. The magic slammed into the feminized teenager, shoving the blonde out of the office and propelling him into the waiting area before the door slammed shut behind him.

The restroom door slammed open, bouncing hard against the tiled wall as Brody rushed inside. He stumbled across the threshold, his boots tangling in the excess fabric of his denim jeans. The pant legs dragged across the floor, extending several inches past his shrunken feet and turning his own clothing into a dangerous tripping hazard. He pitched forward, throwing his hands out to catch himself against the edge of a porcelain sink. His breath came in panicked gasps that echoed off the tiled walls of the empty room.

He kept his head down, gripping the cold porcelain while his mind spun. He had felt the horrifying transformation inside the office, enduring the sensation of his bones cracking and his flesh shifting into a petite female form. He had felt his manhood shrivel away into nothing, replaced by the tidy slit between his thighs. He had heard the high-pitched squeal escaping his lips, but he had not actually seen the damage yet. He squeezed his eyes shut, hoping he would wake up in his holding cell back in Texas, praying this had all been a terrible nightmare.

Brody slowly raised his head, forcing himself to look into the large mirror mounted above the sinks.

A complete stranger stared back at him.

The face in the glass possessed a soft, flawless quality that made his stomach turn. Large, striking eyes stared back at him, framed by long, dark lashes. A dainty button nose sat above a pair of naturally rosy, kissable lips. The blonde hair fell in messy, textured layers around a slender neck, making his new features look delicate. He looked like an attractive, petite girl-next-door, radiating a natural cuteness rather than the cocky delinquent persona he had spent the last few months cultivating.

He raised a hand to his cheek, tracing the smooth, unblemished skin. The rough calluses he had earned playing sports back in Austin were gone, replaced by soft, slender fingers with pristine, short nails. He pulled his gaze down from his face, assessing the rest of the damage. The oversized navy hoodie swallowed his narrow shoulders, hanging off his tiny frame like a blanket, yet it couldn’t hide the distinct perkiness of the new breasts beneath the fabric. The baggy denim pooled around his slim waist, highlighting just how small and vulnerable his body had become.

Brody refused to accept the reflection. He let go of the sink’s edge, planting his oversized boots firmly on the floor and curling his small fingers into tight fists. He closed his eyes and dug deep into his core, searching for the familiar well of magic he always used to force his will upon the world. He commanded the energy to rise, visualizing his tall, muscular male form and demanding his body revert to its natural state. The spark ignited in his chest, traveling up to his scalp in an attempt to break the principal’s curse.

The energy slammed into an invisible, impenetrable barrier. The spell shattered into useless fragments, fizzling out before it could alter a single strand of blonde hair. He opened his eyes, panting with exertion, seeing the exact same cute, helpless girl in the mirror.

Brody slammed his smaller fists against the counter, letting out a frustrated scream. The sound lacked his usual intimidation, coming out as an airy, girlish shriek that echoed through the space. He was trapped. The principal held a level of power Brody couldn’t comprehend, leaving the teenager defenseless.

The restroom door groaned as it swung inward, breaking the silence and interrupting his downward spiral.

Brody spun around, his oversized boots scraping against the floor. A young male student stepped into the room, wearing a fitted gray T-shirt and dark jeans. The guy stood over six feet tall, possessing wide shoulders and a confident swagger that Brody used to emulate. The student carried a canvas backpack slung over one shoulder, and his casual stride halted the moment he spotted the blonde by the sinks.

The guy blinked in surprise, his eyes darting toward the row of urinals mounted on the far wall, then back to the petite girl clutching the counter.

Brody froze, his heart thumping against his ribcage. He had blindly bolted into the first restroom he saw after being shoved out of the office, acting on his lifelong habit of using the men’s room. He had forgotten he no longer looked like he belonged there.

The male student let a slow, sleazy smirk spread across his face. He dropped his backpack onto the floor and took a deliberate step toward the sinks to cut off the exit. His gaze traveled up and down Brody’s shrunken frame, lingering on the noticeable swell of the breasts hidden beneath the large top before moving up to the soft, pretty face. The predatory look in the guy’s eyes made Brody’s skin crawl, triggering a primal sense of vulnerability he had never experienced before.

“Did you get lost looking for the girls’ toilets, doll?” the young stranger asked, taking another step closer. “Or are you just in here looking for some fun?”

Brody opened his mouth to deliver a scathing insult, wanting to threaten the guy and put him in his place. However, the words died in his throat. He no longer possessed superior strength, and he now had an undeniably attractive female body. He couldn’t just mouth off at anyone who stared at him without thinking through the possible repercussions.

A sharp gasp escaped his rosy lips as the older student reached a hand out toward him. Brody refused to stand there and be treated the same way he treated women his age. He scrambled away from the sink, clutching the waist of his baggy denim jeans to keep the heavy fabric from sliding down his slender legs. He ducked his head, charging forward to squeeze through the narrow gap between the student and the wall.

“Leave me alone!” Brody shouted, his high-pitched voice cracking as he shoved his delicate shoulder past the older boy’s chest. He bolted through the doorway, bursting out into the corridor and putting distance between himself and the men’s room.

He kept his hands tightly gripped on his waistline, his footwear awkwardly slapping against the floor as he sprinted down the hallway. He didn’t know where he was going, running blind through the unfamiliar building, but he knew he had to get away from these people and figure out how to get his body back.
